Biden's

Potential itinerary

President Joe Biden is on his first trip to the UK to attend the G7 Summit, June 11-12. He’ll be heading to Carbis Bay, Cornwall, known for its wild moorland, sandy beaches, harbor villages, towering cliffs and seaside resorts. On the tip of Southwest England, Cornwall is the ideal place for work and play alike.

While we’re sure he’s going to be busy in important meetings, we bet he’d love to stretch his legs and sample some of the experiences just waiting to be discovered right outside of his meeting room. We have rounded up the perfect dream itinerary for President Biden based on his favorite hobbies, activities and even food preferences. We invite him to tack on a few extra days and explore Britain’s natural beauty, historic towns and friendly locals.

Here are 10 experiences for President Biden’s perfect British getaway in Cornwall and beyond.

Travel

a Historic Route

There are a few ways to get to Cornwall from London, the closest international air hub for US travelers. While some may choose to take a flight which is just over an hour, or opt for a road trip which will take around seven hours, we would organize an overnight rail ride for President Biden who has expressed his love for trains. The Night Riviera is a sleeper train operated by Great Western Railway, a historic route connecting London to the South West of England. It is one of only three sleeper services on the railway in the United Kingdom with stunning views of the countryside, and it runs six nights a week between London Paddington and Penzance. Upon arrival, Biden will check into the Carbis Bay Hotel to freshen up, awarded the AA “Eco Hotel of the Year” in 2019, where he and the other world leaders will be staying.

Learn

about Cornwall’s Art

St Ives, a seaside town just 10 minutes away, is known for its surf beaches and the local art scene. President Biden has been a long supporter of the arts and can spend his morning visiting the famous galleries and museums in the area. Sculptor Barbara Hepworth made her home here and the President would love a visit to her Museum and Sculpture Garden, a stop by Bernard Leach’s pottery studio, or a trip to the nearby Tate St. Ives, a seafront gallery with rotating modern art exhibitions focused on British artists. If an evening opens up, he could drive down to the Minack Theater, a world famous venue perched on the rugged cliffs of South-West Cornwall. Here, President Biden will surely enjoy the stunning ocean views and can choose from a wide variety of outdoor performances, including live music and plays.

Break

a Sweat on Land or Sea

With President Biden known for his work-outs, usually on a rowing machine or his Peloton, we are sure he’ll be keen to get some exercise his trip. With Cornwall’s stunning seaside he may opt for a kayak explorer tour with Ocean Sports Centre where he can spot local wildlife on the St Ives Bay including seals and bottle nose dolphins. If he wants to stay on land, we are sure he would enjoy a bike rental from Go By Cycle which he can take to see the nearby famous sites including Lanhydrock or the landmark St. Michael’s Mount

Refresh

with a Frozen Treat

After some exercise, President Biden will want to refresh with his favorite dessert, ice cream. He is definitely not shy about his love for chocolate chip ice cream, but after a visit to Moomaid of Zennor, an iconic ice cream parlor on a family run dairy farm perched on the cliffs between Zennor Hill and The Atlantic Ocean, he may be inclined to switch it up. Made in small batches using their own dairy and locally sourced ingredients, President Biden may have a new favorite flavor, with plenty of options to choose from like the Vanilla Bean & Cornish Clotted Cream, Crème Fraiche & Lemon Curd and Orange & Mascarpone.

Visit

the Churches in Cornwall

President Biden is only the second Catholic President in US history and is known to attend mass on Sundays. In the morning, we may expect to find the president visiting the many churches in Cornwall to admire the Gothic architecture. He may be particularly interested in visiting the only catholic cathedral in Cornwall, Truro Cathedral. For over 120 years, Truro Cathedral, built by the people of Cornwall, has been inspiring locals and visitors from all over the world as a place of worship, heritage, music and beauty. Truro, in the centre of Cornwall Cornwall, has a fantastic high street with retailers and independent shops immersed within the city’s iconic history and heritage. Two Presidents, the 19th Rutherford B Hayes and the 32nd Franklin D Roosevelt  were descended from Thomas Burgess emigrated from Truro.

Explore

the Area in Style

There are not many more stylish ways to drive the coast than in an iconic Morgan, the quintessential English sports car. With his love for classic cars, the president may enjoy taking a spin in the open-top Morgan design which is still hand built in Malvern using the same traditional methods but now embracing modern technology to enhance the driving experience. President Biden made news in 2016 when he appeared on Jay Leno’s Garage and debuted his beautifully restored 1967 Corvette, so we may expect him to head to Perranwell Morgan Garage located just outside Truro in the village of Perranwell Station, and pick up a car to explore the surrounding coastline and countryside. He will want to drive north and take in the breath-taking landscape, stopping for fish & chips in Padstow, a well-known seaside town for foodies.

Soak Up

the Natural Beauty

A major topic of discussion for the G7 Summit will be sustainability. With nature top of mind, President Biden will want to stop for the day at the Eden Project located on the South East coast of Cornwall and celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The visitor center is nestled in a huge crater and the President will find massive Biomes housing the world’s largest rainforest in captivity, stunning plants, contemporary gardens, exhibitions and a year round schedule of events. We are sure he will love it so much that he may even plan to visit again next year when the property’s first hotel will open, a 109 bedroom accommodation designed by Tate Harmer with the highest standards of accessibility, energy-efficiency and sustainability.

Afternoon

Tea on a Train

We can never squeeze in enough train experiences for President Biden, and by traveling just 15 minutes north to the heritage steam Bodmin & Wenford Railway, he can hop on board the historic train and enjoy a traditional Cornish afternoon cream tea. He will have to try the famous Cornish Pasty, a baked pastry traditionally filled with meat and vegetables, or learn about the long standing afternoon tea rivalry between Devon and Cornwall, choosing the proper way to eat a scone (hint: he will need to decide what should come first, the jam or the cream).

Discover

the US Connections

2020 saw a major anniversary for US history: the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower. The ship left from Plymouth, England in 1620, a port city in neighboring Devon about an hour from Cornwall. President Biden will learn far more than the story of the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ and the one-dimensional version of the Mayflower voyage. The cultural program, put together by four nations – the Wampanoag, UK, USA and Netherlands – each committed to unpacking the untold stories and highlighting the experiences of different ethnic groups in both history and today. After exploring the area, he will want to stop and see some exhibitions at The Box, a brand new museum in Plymouth acting as the flagship building for the Mayflower 400 commemorations.

A Romantic

Getaway with Jill

To close out the weekend with a bang, President Biden will want to WOW his wife Dr. Jill Biden with an escape to the Isles of Scilly. Like nowhere else in England, this group of 140 islands, five of which are inhabited, lie just off the South West coast of Cornwall but are a world apart in every way. Only 28 miles away and easily accessible by ferry or a 15 minute flight, this destination draws the likes of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Dame Judi Dench and many others for holiday. Guests can find palm trees, white sand beaches and crystal clear water, and each island offers something different for every type of traveler. President Biden may visit St. Mary’s, the largest island, and spend the weekend at the Star Castle Hotel, set in a 16th-century castle with four acres of gardens and sea views.
