Poldark Inspired Dog Walks

Here are a few dog walks around the Poldark filming locations from blog writer Viki Wilson, of dogfriendlycornwall.net.

Do bear in mind they may need to block areas for filming and that there are lots of horses, not to mention Garrick of course…

Botallack

Wheal Owles near Botallack is the stand in for Wheal Leisure, Ross Poldark’s mine, and therefore a key mining location. Find Botallack by heading to St Just and following signs to Botallack. There is a car parking area near the coast path, which you can follow along towards St Just, or in the other direction towards Levant mine near Pendeen, the location of the other Poldark family mine. It is very beautiful, but the cliffs are steep and of course, there are mine works here, so you may wish to keep your dog on a lead and take extra care. Nearby dog friendly pubs are The Gurnard’s Head near Zennor, The Tinner’s Arms in Zennor and The Queen’s Arms in Botallack.

This walk is about one mile and takes 30 minutes.

Holywell Bay

A beautiful dog friendly beach, with wide, golden sands and a lovely little river running down to it, this is a wonderful place to walk, Poldark or not. There are also great dog friendly pubs in the area, with St Piran’s Inn right on the beach and Treguth Inn and the Smuggler’s Den nearby too. There are steep dunes to walk and play in, and again, steep cliffs, so take care.

This walk is about six miles and takes two and a half hours.

Kynance Cove

An award winning beach of spectacular beauty really near the southernmost tip of The Lizard peninsula. Aidan Turner also filmed parts of Agatha Christie’s ‘And Then There Were None’ here. There are lovely walks from here around to The Lizard Peninsula and the Kynance Cove cafe is dog friendly, although the dog ban is still in place until October 1.

This walk is seven miles and takes two hours and 20 minutes, it is steep in places. If this walk is too much, you can take a gentle, surfaced route down from the National Trust car park to the cafe and back.

St Breward

The BBC crew have based Nampara in a little cottage near St Breward and the cottages of Zacky Martin and the other miners are based here too. St Breward is a beautiful village right on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Do be warned it is unwise to simply stroll across the moor without a map or any guidance as there are restricted zones and some dangerous bogs on the moor.

This walk is 5 miles long and takes about two hours crossing the Moor to the King Arthur’s Hall monument and ending at The Old Inn, St Breward, which has a dog friendly bar (and a roaring fire).

Porthcothan

It is a beautiful beach and you can walk to it along the South West Coast Path from Harlyn (about 7 miles) or start a little closer at Treyarnon or Constantine Bay where there are car parks. Dog friendly place to eat: The Cornish Arms in St Merryn, is Rick Stein’s lovely and dog friendly pub.
